THE FILMMAKERS RANCH
SHOWREEL SHOOTOUT

One Set. 2 Minute Scene. 30 Minutes To Shoot.

Zero Excuses. Let’s Shoot A Movie!

WHAT IS THE
SHOWREEL SHOOTOUT?

It’s not just a film challenge—it’s filmmaking in the fast lane. On the first Saturday of each month, we throw open the doors to Filmmakers Ranch and give you one professional standing set, one ticking clock,

and one chance to prove yourself.

You’ve got 30 minutes to step on set, roll camera, and capture a 2-minute scene/short that will turn heads. You'll need a minimum of 1 actor and 1 camera person and a maximum of 10 cast and crew. We supply the essentials: a sound mixer with gear, a sharp 1st AD to keep you moving, and a basic lighting kit to shape your shot.

All you need? Your script. Your crew. A Camera. Your guts.

The cost per team is $200. For 4 of you on a team that's just $50 for a great piece of your reel.

For 8 of you, that's just $25 each!

The Showreel Shootout is where actors, directors, DPs, and writers come to push limits, sharpen skills, and walk away with polished, reel-ready footage—shot under real-world pressure. It’s raw. It’s fast. It’s electric.

Previous months participants get first opportunity to sign up for the following month and our space is limited so don't wait to sign up. If we are full already reach out to be put on our waiting list.

Are you ready to make your movie?

HOW IT WORKS...

Below is your step-by-step breakdown for how the Showreel ShootOut works...

1. We Announce The Set...

At Filmmakers Ranch, our world-class standing sets are your playground.

On the first Saturday of every month, we unveil the set for the next Showreel Shootout. One month it might be an interrogation room dripping with tension, the next a sterile hospital ward begging for drama, or even a gritty classroom perfect for teenage rebellion.

When we announce the set, you’ll get:

Photos & Layouts of the space so you can plan your shots.

A list of props on hand (and yes, you can bring your own).

Then, you sign up, and select your shoot time for the following month.

2. You Write The Script.

Knowing the location, you now write a killer 2 minute short film or scene. For reference, a 2 minute scene is usually 2 pages of a professionally formatted screenplay, but to make sure you are under the time limit we suggest you time a live reading of your finished script.

So what are we expecting with these scripts: anything! That's right, it could be drama, comedy, scfi, horror. You name it. It could have 5 actors, it could have 1 actor. You push the boundries, and show how great it can be.

3. Assemble Your Team

Next up is assembling your team.

Cast your actors, get your crew, and start planning how you want to shoot this!

The crew size must be a minimum of one actor and one camera person. But it can be as large as ten people. What type of roles might you want to consider?

Actors, Director, Cinematographer, Hair & Make Up, Costume Designer, G&E team... It's really up to you. We can it at 10 people per team including actors.

If you want to find people to work with, check out our showreel shoot out message board to find people wanting to work on teams or looking for a team... this can be a great way to build relationships in the industry.

4. Plan Like A Pro

Every great film starts long before the cameras roll.

Rehearse with your actors—give them space to dig deep, find the truth of their characters, and bring the scene to life. Map out how you’ll shoot and light it, pushing past the obvious to showcase your distinct voice—or use this as your chance to experiment and discover it.

Dial in the details: wardrobe, hair, makeup, props, timing for each setup. The more prepared you are, the more you can own those 30 minutes on set.

This is your shot—arrive ready, bold, and brimming with ideas. The best films don’t happen by accident.

5. Show Up & Shoot

Have your team show up at Filmmakers Ranch a minimum of 1 hour before your shoot time. That way you can sign in, get everyone ready and check your camera, do your makeup, and have a last minute team checkin before our PAs will ask you to line up outside the set 15 minutes before your 30 minutes start.

Once in the set, your actor(s) should head to the sound mixer to get miked up and your cameraperson (and their team if they have any) can set up your first shot and light the scene with the kit we provide.

We suggest you give the Filmmakers Ranch First Assistant Director a breakdown of how you anticipate your 30 minute shoot going.

6. Edit Your Film.

At the end of the film, our sound recordist will send you the audio file for you to sync with your video.

You then have a few weeks to edit your film, finish any sound design, music, VFX, you would like to add. Note: the rules are that the film has to be under 2 minutes (it can be as short as you like) and no outside locations can be used.

Export your film as H.264, 1920x1080 (Full HD), A bitrate of 30Mbps is recommended), Stereo Audio, with a 24 fps frame rate. Include 2 seconds of black at the head of the file and 1 second of black at the end. The file should be named: ShowreelShootOut_MONTHNAME_YEAR_TEAMNAME

This is an opportunity to inspire others and be inspired, to form new relationships, perhaps even show some people what you are thinking of shooting for next months shoot out and get feedback!

We'll invite other industry folk to join so you can get exposed to others too!

9. Add It To Your Reel

This is where your work pays off.

Take your finished scene and add it to your showreel—the proof of your talent in action. Use it to fill the gaps in your reel, showcase the roles you’re perfect for, and remove any doubt from casting directors, producers, and execs.

Stop leaving it to chance. Show them exactly why you’re the one.

And the best part? You own your film. Post it, share it, submit it—this is your calling card. Use it however you like to open doors and land your next big role or project.
